Kremlin Confirms Resuming Technical Dialogue with Paris

(MENAFN) Russia and France have restored technical-level diplomatic contacts, though no presidential-level talks are planned, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday, responding to remarks by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Macron told a German newspaper that European nations must engage Moscow as the Ukraine conflict “enters its final stage,” contrasting with years of Western attempts to isolate Russia.

Peskov said the renewed communications “would allow swift organization of top-level dialogue, should it be required and necessary,” but noted, “We have not received any indication it is required.” He added that Moscow welcomes the development because serious international issues “will not solve themselves, and the confrontation is not helping.” He also noted that no similar outreach has come from other Western nations.

Macron is among several EU leaders advocating re-engagement with Russia, warning that failure to do so would weaken Europe’s influence over its own future. “Would you prefer that American ambassadors and envoys negotiate the date of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union on your behalf, on behalf of Europe?” he asked. “No, I’m sorry. That’s a matter of self-respect. Self-respect is good; we need it.”

Kiev is seeking to include a commitment for Ukrainian EU membership by 2027 in a US-mediated peace deal with Russia, a step likely to strengthen President Zelensky’s position. EU officials are reportedly considering partial membership for candidates not yet meeting full accession criteria, while preparing strategies to address Hungarian opposition to Ukraine’s bid.
